Evelyn Cortez-Ford is the founder of the company School Leadership Coaching, and is also an NBCT with 20 years of experience as an educator. This collection of columns is aimed at administrators (part of the Education World series Administrator’s Desk). The column titles are questions: “What is Teacher Leadership?” “How Do I Know If I’m Ready to Share Leadership?’ “What Do I Do When Teachers Depend Too Much on Me for Leadership?” “In professional learning communities, teachers are active participants in bringing about change. That collaborative culture has blurred of the roles of teacher and principal,” Cortez-Ford comments. “The empowered status of teachers requires teacher-leaders and principals to reframe their relationships.” Although Cortez-Ford addresses administrators as the facilitators of teacher leadership, the point of view provides a broadening perspective on what systems need to be in place for teacher leadership to thrive as part of a school culture.
