A recent study by the CNA Corporation has found "robust evidence" that National Board Certification is an effective indicator of teacher quality. The study examined nearly 108,000 individual student records collected from Miami-Dade County Public Schools to assess the contribution that teachers' professional characteristics make to student achievement in mathematics in the ninth and tenth grades. All else being equal -- student characteristics, school environment and teacher preparation -- Miami-Dade math teachers who had achieved National Board Certification helped their students achieve larger testing gains than did colleagues who had not earned certification. The study found that NBCTs are particularly effective with students who have special needs and provides some evidence that Black and Hispanic students may also receive extra benefits.
