Veteran teachers nearing retirement and teachers in their first few years of service differ in their goals and expectations, say Susan Moore Johnson and Susan M. Kardos in this article from Educational Leadership's special issue on "Supporting New Educators" (May 2005). To make substantive improvements in teaching and learning, they contend, "a school must draw on the professional knowledge and skills that experienced teachers have accumulated and refined over the years while also capitalizing on the energy and fresh ideas of new recruits. These two vital resources, however, often operate in different pockets of the school." While the authors focus on ways principals can bring the two groups together, much of their advice carries over to teachers in leadership positions within a school -- especially those who have the principal's ear. Another article in this issue reports on one high school's success in "jump-starting" teacher collaboration.
