The KIPP Academies may be the crown jewels of the charter school movement. This story from the Christian Science Monitor profiles the principal of a start-up school in San Jose, CA who says the KIPP approach is based on common sense. "Set high expectations, spend more time in school, have kids make a choice and commit to that, focus on results, give the principal authority over hiring and spending. That's logical. It's not magic." With $25 million in philanthropic support, KIPP has grown to more than 30 schools nationwide, all public, some charter, all serving mostly minority, mostly poor students.
