This essay by leadership expert Margaret Wheatley has become something of an Internet classic. In "Goodbye Command and Control," Wheatley speaks about "organizations of all kinds" that are "cluttered with control mechanisms that paralyze employees and leaders alike." But educators will surely think of schools and schoolsystems when they read this: "Most change efforts fail when leaders take an innovation that has worked well in one area...and attempt to roll it out to the entire organization. This desire to replicate success actually destroys local initiative.... Information about what has worked elsewhere can be very helpful. However, these solutionscannot be imposed; they have to remain local."
