At Frederick Douglas Academy in Harlem, Timothy Hearn's high school science students are well behaved and academically successful, thanks to a system he establishes at the beginning of each school year. Once the behavior system is in place, says this story in Teacher Magazine, "he can devote entire periods to content. As a result, virtually all his students pass his classes, with half choosing to sit for the Regents exam and more than 85 percent passing on the first try...." (May require free registration.)
