Former Michigan teacher of the year Nancy Flanagan believes the single salary schedule for teachers "has outlived its usefulness" and that it's time "to structure pay-for-performance models that actually leverage the kinds of teacher performance that improve student learning." In this interview at the TeachersCount website, Flanagan -- a 30-year music teacher -- also reflects on the future of arts education and the need to develop teacher reward systems that recognize the contributions of all expert teachers, not just those whose content is tested in state accountability systems.
