On the eve of another first day of school, I found myself reminiscing
about my favorite teacher. She ignited my desire to want to learn.
School was exciting and full of adventure. I strived for perfect
attendance.
In Qualities of Effective Teachers, Second Edition,
Stronge examines specific behaviors that contribute to quality student
learning. He focuses on what teachers can control: planning,
personality, classroom management, and monitoring student progress.
This edition includes new tips and tools for engaging at-risk students
and high ability students. This edition is designed to serve as a
reference tool and resource for educators.
Personal Reaction: I enjoyed reading this book and I have shared some of the
information with my peers. Stronge shares that effective teachers tend
to demonstrate strong communication skills, which lots of research has
denoted as a direct relationship between student academic success. Part
1 discusses the personality of the teacher, classroom management,
planning, implementing instruction, and monitoring student progress.
Effective teachers know their students both formally and informally.
Part 2 of Qualities of Effective Teachers, Second Edition is a collection of resources. In this section, the reader will find
skills checklists, elaborate lists of teacher responsibilities, and an
annotated bibliography. The checklists are great tools to assist with
the reflection of one’s teaching ability. It helps you identify
strengths and weaknesses and stimulate your professional growth. The
bibliography is comprised of short, compact, annotations that allow one
to find out more about specific areas of teacher effectiveness research.
Recommendation: A good addition to your professional library. Qualities of Effective Teachers, Second Edition
is a good book for any teacher looking to improve the quality of
learning for students. There are several thoughts and suggestions that
allow for improvement of teacher performance and student achievement.
