Merit pay, performance pay, knowledge- and skill-based pay -- they are all making news as alternatives or supplements to the traditional teacher step-pay system. But what do they mean for teachers? This article at the Education World website explores the growing debate about professional compensation tied to performance. How do these pay-for-performance systems work? Are they really workable? "Talking about it is easier than doing it," says one union leader. "The biggest problem is that people want to get to it next week, and then -- when they can't -- they move on to something else." Can salaries ever be fairly tied to teacher performance or student outcomes?
